Send an email to awa-subscribe at austinwirelessalliance.org to join our mailing list!<br />Monday, July 10, 2006<br /><br />Freescale unveils magnetic memory chip<br /><br />Achieving a long-sought goal of the $48 billion memory chip industry, Freescale Semiconductor Inc. announced the commercial availability of a chip that combines traditional memory's endurance with a hard drive's ability to keep data while powered down.<br />ADVERTISEMENT<br /><br />The chips, called magnetoresistive random-access memory or MRAM, maintain information by relying on magnetic properties rather than an electrical charge. Unlike flash memory, which also can keep data without power, MRAM is fast to read and write bits, and doesn't degrade over time.<br /><br />Freescale, which was spun off of Motorola Inc. in July 2004, said Monday it has been producing the 4-megabit MRAM chips at an Arizona factory for two months to build inventory. (formerly PropheSi Technologies(TM), Inc.), a fabless semiconductor company providing modules for the wireless infrastructure market, today announced that it closed a $30 million Series C funding round led by Oak Investment Partners. Existing PulseWave RF investors, including Austin Ventures, Bay Partners and Genesis Campus, also participated in the round. PulseWave RF will use the funding to commercialize its Class M Power amplifier module, the industry's first digital power amplifier architecture for wireless base stations. Von Tetzchner is currently the CEO for Opera Software, and is a knowledgeable speaker on numerous topics including Opera as a company, its technology, operations, the marketplace and other industry-related subjects. Von Tetzchner holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Oslo. Upon completing his education, he worked as a research scientist for Norwegian Telecom Research from 1991 to 1995. Von Tetzchner has received numerous honors and awards for his accomplishments through Opera Software. He was recently included in the Forum of Young Global Leaders for 2005 and listed as one of Business Week's Stars of Europe for 2004.<br /><br />David Gill is the Senior Director of Sales for M:Metrics, the first audience measurement company focused on the market for wireless content and applications. David holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin.
